What is meant by Eco-Efficiency?

What is Eco-efficiency?

“Eco-efficiency is increasingly becoming a key requirement for success in business. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) describes eco-efficiency as a management strategy of doing more with less. In practice, eco-efficiency is achieved through the pursuit of three core objectives:

1. Increasing product or service value;
2. Optimizing the use of resources; and,
3. Reducing environmental impact.

Because of the opportunity for cost savings associated with each of these objectives, addressing them makes good business sense. In fact, case studies of companies that have adopted eco-efficient technologies and practices demonstrate that eco-efficiency stimulates productivity and innovation, increases competitiveness and improves environmental performance.”
This came from Canadian website - http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/ee-ee.nsf/eng/h_ef00010.html.

My understanding of eco efficiency is basically to get the most out of the resources/ materials at hand. Even more simply it’s using two sides of a piece of paper instead of one. By making the most out of one thing or reusing it before moving on to the next piece of resource the reduction of the use of the materials is ecologically more efficient. It’s about being resourceful and making the choice to reduce the amount of waste and therefore reducing environmental impact.
I feel that to some extent various measures are available to increase ecological efficiency. Here are some images of some examples I have found to support my ideas.

Could people do more than what is already being done?

A video i found on VideoJug talking to Spencer Brown, founder and inventor of Earth friendly moving, explains about the three pillars. There is several videos on this subject however this is the link of the main subject of the three pillars.

Spencer Brown also has a website which i have been looking at. It is quite interesting about his angle of attack on waste and recycling. Have a look.
